    MTNL workers’ strike hits services for second day

    New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) Nearly 8,000 employees of the state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) continued their strike for the second consecutive day Tuesday, affecting telephone and internet services in Delhi.

    The workers’ union of MTNL went on strike Monday, demanding pay revision according to the recommendation of the sixth pay commission.


    Local court rejects Bindra’s transit bail plea

    Chandigarh, May 19 (IANS) A court in Mohali Tuesday rejected the transit bail plea of Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra’s father A.S. Bindra, who was arrested last week for over Rs.90 million (Rs.9 crore) fraud and is under treatment in a Chandigarh hospital after he complained of chest pain.

    Bindra’s transit bail application was rejected by Additional Sessions judge S.K. Garg of a local court in Mohali, Punjab, around 10 km from here.

Texmaco, United Group tie up to make hi-tech wagons

Kolkata, May 19 (IANS) Texmaco Ltd, a KK Birla group company, has formed a joint venture with United Group of Australia to manufacture hi-tech wagon and locomotive bogie frames, it was announced here Tuesday.

“A joint venture company with United Group, one of Asia’s leading end-to-end rail technology solutions provider, has been incorporated, and steps are being discussed to set up a modern facility to make hi-tech wagon and locomotive bogie frames for Indian Railways, the private industry and exports,” Texmaco said in a statement.



UAE archaeologists discover 3,000 B.C. pottery

Dubai, May 19 (IANS) Archaeologists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have discovered potsherds dating back to around 3,000 B.C., WAM reported Tuesday.

The discovery was made in the Ed-Dur archaeological site in the emirate of Umm Al Qaiwain.



Custodial killing of civilian triggers protests in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 19 (IANS) A Jammu and Kashmir police officer was suspended Tuesday following widespread protests over his alleged involvement in the custodial death of a man a day earlier.

Inspector Khurshid of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police Monday allegedly arrested Manzoor Ahmed Beg, 40, a car dealer from Aloochi Bagh in Srinagar for unknown reasons, residents of the area said.



India to send special envoys to Sri Lanka: Mukherjee

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) With Sri Lanka’s military offensive against the Tamil Tigers coming to an end, India said Tuesday it would send send special envoys to Colombo and is also preparing a Rs.500 crore (Rs.5 billion) package to help in the rehabilitation of Tamil civilians displaced in the fighting.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, reacting to the news of the end of the military operation in Sri Lanka, told reporters that while “the rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Persons” (Tamil civilians) was urgently required, India was also looking at the Sri Lankan government to ensure a “political solution to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of the ethnic minorities including the Tamils”.



Outward warmth, but differences divide Obama, Netanyahu

Tel Aviv, May 19 (DPA) US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a show of cordiality when they met in Washington which commentators saw as setting the tone for future relations between Tel Aviv and its key ally.

Despite predictions, there was no “blow up” between the two men, possibly, as commentator Brett Stephens noted in the Wall Street Journal, because “the last thing” Netanyahu and Obama need “is to get into a giant contest of wills” this early into their respective administrations.

Undertrials may now travel in AC coaches!

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) If Delhi police has its way, undertrials lodged in the high security Tihar jail may soon travel in air conditioned rail coaches if their presence is required in any other courts in the country.

There was a representation made to the Delhi government by the Delhi police that under recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, they are entitled to avail the facility of AC three-tier berth in trains while escorting undertrials to other states on a transit remand but they cannot because undertrials are only entitled to the general class, Tihar jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said.
