Mexico swine flu toll rises to 66

Mexico City, May 16 (EFE) The toll in Mexico’s swine flu outbreak has risen to 66, officials said Saturday.

Till date 2,829 people have been infected with the influenza A(H1N1) virus, also called swine flu. About three percent of those infected with the virus have succumbed to the disease.



Mind-body programme helps women cope better with cancer

New York, May 16 (IANS) Pathfinders, a mind-body-spirit programme, helps women cope with terminal cancer and improves their quality of life, according to a new study.

“The program helped improve distress and despair during the initial three months and up to six months after diagnosis among women with metastatic breast cancer and a six-month life expectancy,” said Amy Abernethy.

Washington, May 16 (IANS) H. pylori, the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers and gastric cancer affecting half the global population, is becoming highly resistant to antibiotics.

A new study by scientists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre (BIDMC) and the MIT shows that glutamine, amino acid found in many foods and dietary supplements, may prove beneficial in offsetting damage caused by H. pylori infection.

Washington, May 16 (ANI): Low-oxygen regions in prostate tumours can be used to predict the recurrence of cancer in a patient, say scientists.
Researchers at the Fox Chase Cancer Center came to this conclusion after analysing the observations made during a long-term study, whose results will be presented at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.



Taiwan scientists identify gene playing role in lifespan

Taipei, May 16 (DPA) Taiwan scientists said they have identified a gene linked to ageing in mammals that could have the potential to extend human life.

The researchers at Taipei’s National Yang-Ming University stumbled upon the Cisd2 gene accidentally as they were trying to identify a gene linked to liver cancer in mice, the Taipei Times reported Saturday.



Fifth US swine flu death confirmed

Washington/New York, May 16 (DPA) The toll from swine flu in the US reached five Friday, with nearly 5,000 confirmed cases.

Texas state health officials late Friday announced that a man who died last week in South Texas has been confirmed by laboratory tests to have been infected with the A(H1N1) flu virus. The victim was described as in his 30s and suffering underlying health problems that increased his vulnerability to flu complications.



Bullet removed from Chinese woman’s face after 42 years

Beijing, May 15 (DPA) Doctors in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing have cut a bullet out of a woman’s face 42 years after it lodged there, media reports said Friday.

The 3.3-centimetre bullet was removed from He Wenying, 65, Thursday at a hospital in the city, the Chongqing Evening News reported.
