    Cancer wouldn’t be deadly in the next 20 years, say UK expert

    London, May 15 (ANI): While the rate of cancer survival has been improving day-by-day, a British expert reckons that cancer will no longer be a killer in the next 20 years.

    Karol Sikora, professor of Cancer Medicine at Imperial College London, has said that the treatments for the disease are undergoing a “revolution”, which means that within just two decades, “we will simply run out of things from which to die.”

    And rather than facing a possible death sentence, cancer patients will be treated as if they have a long-term illness like diabetes, heart disease or asthma.


    Flu virus was not lab creation, WHO says

    Geneva, May 14 (DPA) There is no evidence to support a theory that the new influenza A(H1N1) virus was created in a laboratory, a World Health Organisation official said Thursday.

    Scientists associated with the WHO had taken the theory seriously, said Keiji Fukuda, the organisation’s head of health security, and looked into the claim.

Apex court orders Rs.10 mn compensation for medical negligence (Lead)

New Delhi, May 14 (IANS) Nearly two decades after Bangalore-based Infosys engineer Prashanth S. Dhananka became paralysed waist down after a botched surgery, the Supreme Court ordered the Nizam Medical Institute of Hyderabad to pay him a record compensation of Rs.10 million, while praising him for fighting the case himself though confined to a wheelchair.

Ordering the compensation for medical negligence to Dhananka, a bench of Justice B.N. Agrawal also asked the apex court’s registry to send the verdict to the victim through registered post at his address in Bangalore.



Belgium confirms second case of swine flu

Brussels, May 14 (DPA) The Belgian authorities Thursday confirmed the second case of swine flu in the country, less than 24 hours after the first case was identified, Belgian media reported.

A special governmental commission set up to control any possible outbreak of the disease made the announcement, the Belga news agency said. The identity of the victim is not yet known.

India free from swine flu, six under scanner

New Delhi, May 14 (IANS) India continues to be free from influenza A(H1N1) infection, commonly known as swine flu, but six people have been quarantined for suspected symptoms, health ministry officials said Thursday.

Six passengers who came from countries affected with swine flu have been kept under observation in government health facilities.



CPI veteran Homi Daji is dead (Lead)

Bhopal, May 14 (IANS) Veteran Communist Homi Daji, a former MP, died Thursday at a private hospital in Indore, sources in the Communist Party of India (CPI) said. He was 84.

Daji was admitted to the hospital May 2 after he experienced difficulty in breathing and his lungs became infected. The Madhya Pradesh government had announced an assistance of Rs.100,000 for his treatment.



Kerala IT firms to spread AIDS awareness campaign

Thiruvananthapuram, May 14 (IANS) Companies based in the Technopark IT industrial park here will join hands with the Kerala government to strengthen the AIDS awareness campaign in the state, an industry official said here Thursday.

The Group of Technopark Companies (GTECH), a body representing the chief executives of the Technopark firms, has adopted a corporate policy on HIV/AIDS that calls for strengthening the awareness campaign among among the member companies and employees, the group secretary, Satish Babu, said.



Indian-origin writer in costly fight with chiropractors

London, May 14 (IANS) Popular Indian-origin science writer Simon Singh says he is considering fighting on with the British Chiropractic Association in a libel case that has already cost him more than 100,000 pounds.

Singh, a journalist, author and broadcaster, has been sued by the association for an article he wrote in The Guardian newspaper last year saying the association was supporting members who claimed chiropractic treatment could treat children’s colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying.
