New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) The land of pharaohs and pyramids, Egypt, is hard selling itself in India as a destination for leisure as well as meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions.

The northern African country is cheaper and more attractive than destinations in Europe and Africa, director of Egyptian tourism in India Magdi Selim said.

New York, April 25 (DPA) Major US stock indices rose Friday amid a second day of company earnings that beat analysts’ estimates, but the rally to end the week was not enough to continue six straight weeks of gains.

Ford Motor Co reported a smaller-than-expected $1.4-billion loss for the first quarter amid an almost 40-percent drop in car sales. American Express Co reported a $447-million profit over the first three months.



Apple fires 1,600 from retail stores

San Francisco, April 25 (DPA) Apple has fired some 1,600 employees from its chain of retail stores due to slackening consumer demand, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The job cuts were referenced in a securities filing by Apple Thursday in which the company said it had 14,000 full-time equivalent employees in its retail division as of March 28, down from the 15,600 as of the end of December.



Courier giant UPS profits shrink by half

New York, April 24 (IANS) The global recession has taken its toll on the United Parcel Service (UPS), with the world delivery leader reporting a 55 percent plunge in profits Thursday.

In a statement, Atlanta-based courier giant said its profit for the first quarter (January to March) of 2009 shrank to $401 million from $906 million during the same period last year - a drop of 55 percent. As the company reported a profit of just 40 cents per share - down from 87 cents a year ago, its shares slipped 6.5 percent to $51.21 Thursday.
