    Microsoft sales drop for first time in 23 years

    San Francisco, April 24 (DPA) Microsoft reported a drop in quarterly revenues Thursday for the first time in the 23 years since it went public.

    But investors still gave the world largest software company their approval, sending Microsoft shares higher in after-market trading as its aggressive cost cutting measures preserved profitability.


    NASA for early Hubble mission

    Washington, April 24 (DPA) The fifth and last mission to repair the ageing Hubble Space Telescope could launch a day earlier than planned, officials at the US space agency said Thursday.

    The space shuttle Atlantis was earlier scheduled to take off from its Florida launch site on May 12. But officials at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said the shuttle could likely take off at 2:01 p.m. on May 11.

Astronomers discover youngest and lowest mass dwarf stars

Washington, April 23 (ANI): Astronomers have found three brown dwarfs with estimated masses of less than 10 times that of Jupiter, making them among the youngest and lowest mass sub-stellar objects detected in the solar neighborhood to date.



Apple posts $1.21 billion profit; iPhone sales surge 123 percent

New York, April 23 (IANS) The economic slump seems to have no impact on Apple Inc. as Cupertino-based electronic and software giant posted a quarterly profit of $1.21 billion on revenue of $8.16 billion Wednesday.

Driven by higher sales of iPhones and iPods, Apple’s quarterly profit is 15.2 percent up from $1.05 billion during the same period a year ago. About 46 percent of the company’s revenue came from international sales. During this (second) quarter, Apple sold 3.79 million iPhones, up a huge 123 percent from the same period last year.



Premji optimistic about economic recovery

Bangalore, April 22 (IANS) Wipro chairman Azim Premji Wednesday said he was more optimistic now than a month ago about recovery in the Indian and the US markets after a huge amount of uncertainty.

“Overall, we are feeling more optimistic today than we would have felt even four weeks back about the Indian and the US markets though it’s too early to make a call on the European and Japanese markets, which are large markets for IT services,” Premji told IANS here.



Pricewaterhouse names three members of advisory board

Chennai, April 22 (IANS) Audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) India Wednesday named three members of its proposed advisory board, which will help the local executives rebuild the company’s tarnished image after the Satyam scam.

PwC, which for several years inspected the books of the fraud-hit Satyam Computer Services, said in a statement that three retired bureaucrats - former cabinet secretary Naresh Chandra, former comptroller and auditor general V.K. Shunglu and former chief election commissioner B.B. Tandon - will be in the five-member advisory board.



World plunging into ever-deeper recession: IMF

Washington, April 22 (DPA) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Wednesday offered its most dire picture yet of a world that is plunging into by far its deepest recession since World War II.

The IMF further slashed its economic forecast from just one month ago, predicting the global economy will shrink by 1.3 percent in 2009 and recover to only 1.9-percent growth in 2010. The IMF in March predicted a range of 0.5-1 percent for this year.



Wipro net profit up 15 percent in fourth quarter

Bangalore, April 22 (IANS) Wipro Ltd posted a net profit of Rs.10.1 billion (Rs.1,010 crore) for the fourth quarter (January-March) of fiscal 2008-09, registering 15 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth under the Indian accounting standard.

In a regulatory filing, the IT bellwether said Wednesday its consolidated revenues for the quarter under review (Q4) of FY 2009 rose to Rs.64.52 billion (Rs.6,452 crore), posting YoY growth of 13 percent under the Indian accounting standard.



Yahoo to axe five percent of workforce

San Francisco, April 22 (DPA) Internet portal Yahoo said Tuesday that it planned to cut five percent of its workforce as the company struggles with the economic downturn and the dominance of Google in internet search.

Yahoo announced the job cuts as it reported quarterly income of $118 million, down 78 percent from a year ago but still above analysts’ expectations. Sales for the Silicon Valley company fell 13 percent to $1.6 billion.



British economy falls into deflation, first since 1960

London, April 21 (IANS) The British economy has entered deflation for the first time in almost half a century, heralding a fall in wages and freeze in pensions, a media report said Tuesday.

The Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation fell to -0.4 percent in March, indicating that prices paid by consumers last month were lower than a year ago - a trend not seen since March 1960, The Telegraph reported.
