GCA backs GOA demand for implementing sports policy

Panaji, May 12 (IANS) Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president and Congress legislator Dayanand Narvekar has supported the Goa Olympic Association’s (GOA) demand for implementation of the state’s sports policy.

GOA has warned the state government that if the sports policy is not implemented within three months they would boycott all national championships and the National Games.



India out of Asia Cup hockey medal race

Kuantan (Malaysia), May 12 (IANS) Defending champions India were knocked out of medal contention in the Asia Cup hockey tournament after they were held 2-2 by China in their concluding league fixture here Tuesday.

India, who had lost 2-3 to Pakistan in their first match, needed a win against China to qualify for the semi-finals from the three-team pool. However, after taking a 2-0 lead in the first-half, India surrendered the initiative as China, who had drawn 1-1 with Pakistan, struck twice after resumption.



‘Barack Obama loves tall women’

The four-time Olympic gold medal winner, who is set to taste retirement, recalled her meeting with the President, who excels in the sport.

New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has taken a serious view of Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar’s recent acts of misdemeanor and asked him to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

Sushil and the WFI have been at loggerheads for sometime now and the sport’s controlling body in the country was enraged after he was disqualified at the Asian Championships at Pattaya, Thailand, earlier in the week for being overweight.

Madrid, May 9 (DPA) Madrid’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics made a strong, positive impression on the evaluating commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), commission head Nawal El Moutawakel said.

“We have been most impressed to find what the city of Madrid could offer to the Olympic movement,” El Moutawakel said at a press conference on the final day of a five-day visit to the Spanish capital Friday.
