Bangalore best Indian city but lags behind globally

New York, April 29 (IANS) India’s IT hub Bangalore has been rated the country’s best city to live in on this year’s global list but at 142 it falls far behind the leader, Austrian capital Vienna, in the chart comparing standard of living.

At 145, New Delhi is the second best Indian city to live in. Mumbai, which was at 142 last year in the list prepared by global consultants Mercer, has slipped to 148 in 2009.



Australian Davis Cupper Masters recalls trip to Chennai

Sydney, April 28 (IANS) Former Australian Davis Cupper Geoff Masters Tuesday supported Tennis Australia’s (TA) decision not to send the team to India, while recalling how his team decided to play the tie in Madras in 1973 despite a death threat.

Masters said they were informed of a life threat issued by a group called ‘Black September’ two days before the start of the tie.

New Delhi, April 25 (IANS) The International Tennis Federation (ITF) Saturday declared India the winner of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I third round tie after Australia decided against sending its team to Chennai for the May 8-10 match citing security concerns.

India now move to the World Group Play-off Sept 18-20 and the ITF Davis Cup Committee will impose sanctions on Australia. The 28-time champions Australia risk a one-year ban from the competition and a $100,000 fine.

New Delhi, April 25 (IANS) Tennis Australia (TA) Saturday decided to pull out of the Davis Cup tie against India in Chennai, sparking strong reactions from the All India Tennis Association (AITA), Indian sportspersons and officials.

TA announced that it will not send its team to play the Davis Cup tie in Chennai May 8-10 because of security concerns. Australia risks a one-year ban from the competition and a $100,000 fine, after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) board’s rejection of its appeal to move the tie out of India.



Australia’s pullout will not impact Commonwealth Games: Olympics body

New Delhi, April 25 (IANS) The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has said that Australia’s pullout from Davis Cup in India next month will not impact the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, and asked the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to take stringent action against Tennis Australia (TA) for defying the apex body.

TA Saturday refused to send its team for the May 8-10 tie in Chennai after the ITF board turned down its appeal to shift it out of India.



I had given security assurance to Tennis Australia: Sports minister

New Delhi, April 25 (IANS) Sports minister M.S. Gill said Saturday that Tennis Australia (TA) had pulled out of its Davis Cup tie against India in Chennai despite receiving a security assurance from him.

“I regret that TA is not willing to come to Chennai, to play us in the Davis Cup. I was in Melbourne and Sydney in March, to see their Commonwealth and Olympic facilities. I spoke at luncheon meetings, with all their senior sports people, and foreign office representatives. I said then that there is no justification for Australia not to play in Chennai,” said Gill in a statement.



Amsterdam looks for 2028 Olympics locations

Amsterdam, April 24 (DPA) Amsterdam will earmark Olympic locations over the next months in a first step to host the 2028 Games, the city’s alderman for public spaces said Friday.

Amsterdam hopes to land the Games 100 years after hosting the 1928 edition.
