    9 Tibetans held for protesting outside Chinese embassy in Delhi

    New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) Nine Tibetan students were arrested Monday after they chained themselves to the barbed wire fencing outside the Chinese embassy here to protest against a Chinese court recently sentencing two Tibetans to death, police said.

    “Nine Tibetans have been arrested for protesting outside the Chinese embassy. Wire cutters were used to cut their chains and they will be produced in a local court soon,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S. Dash told IANS.


    ‘Azlan Shah win a small step in right direction’

    New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) The Azlan Shah Cup victory is a small step in the right direction and the real test is how well can India perform at the New Delhi 2010 World Cup and the subsequent Commonwealth Games. That’s how the hockey selectors and former players see the triumph at Ipoh where India won the Cup after an interval of 13 years.

    Former captain and now a selector Zafar Iqbal said India won a title after a long time and it would certainly boost the morale of the team.

Gill, Kalmadi congratulate Indian hockey team

New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) Sports minister M.S. Gill and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chairman Suresh Kalmadi congratulated the Indian hockey team for winning the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup after 13 years.

India beat Malaysia 3-1 in Sunday’s final in Ipoh, Malaysia, to bring home the Cup for the fourth time.



Sunil and his teamates won it for his father

New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) When India forward S.V Sunil was informed of his father’s death during the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament at Ipoh, his teammates wanted him to return home. But, like the true soldier that he is, he decided to stay back and do his national duty. It was a tough call and the young man from Coorg district of Karnataka, went on to inspire his team to win the cup for the fourth time.

AFI president and Congress leader Umrao Singh passes away

New Delhi, April 12 (IANS) Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president and veteran Congress leader Umrao Singh passed away in Jalandhar Sunday after a brief illness. He was 82 and is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.

Umrao, a former Congress MP, was suffering from chest infection for the past few months. He was associated with the AFI for the past 50 years and also served as its president twice and was also a council member of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).
