    US to provide $100 million of humanitarian aid to Pakistan

    Washington, May 19 (IANS) The US plans to provide $100 million of humanitarian aid to Pakistan as part of the Obama administration’s new strategy for countering the appeal of Taliban militants, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Tuesday.

    “Providing this assistance is not only the right thing to do but we believe it’s essential to global security and the security of the United States,” she said at a news conference at the White House. “And we are prepared to do more as the situation demands.”


    Civilian casualties anger people in Pakistan

    Islamabad, May 19 (DPA) A mayor in Pakistan’s northwestern Lower Dir district threatened to rise against the military troops if the “indiscriminate firing and bombardment that mainly kills the civilians” was not stopped.

    “This operation is only killing the civilians. On one side the government has held the people in the conflict zone by imposing indefinite curfew, and on the other hand it is making no distinction between the civilian and militant targets,” said Ahmad Hassan.

Pakistani forces evict Taliban from two northwestern towns (Lead)

Islamabad, May 19 (IANS) The Pakistani military Tuesday wrested two towns in the restive northwest from the Taliban on a day President Asif Ali Zardari asserted the entire country was united in the struggle against terrorism.

The military said Maidan in Lower Dir and Matta in Swat had been cleared of militants and the civilians who had fled the fighting could now return home.



No danger of Talibanisation in Punjab, says governor

Humanitarian situation in Buner, Lower Dir improving, says official

Islamabad, May 19 (IANS) The humanitarian situation in Buner and Dir districts in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) is gradually improving as the security forces were able to eliminate the Taliban threat from most parts of the region, an official said Tuesday.

Lt. General Nadeem Ahmed, head of the Special Support Group for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), said the situation is improving in Buner and Lower Dir areas.



Pakistan Army kills 16 militants in Swat

Islamabad, May 19 (IANS) Sixteen Taliban militants and three security forces personnel were killed in separate overnight clashes in Pakistan’s restive Swat Valley, officials said Tuesday.

According to the authorities, the security forces are currently consolidating their positions in the valley. Three Pakistani soldiers were killed in the overnight clashes against the militants in the area, officials said.
