    Zardari to meet Brown in London

    London, May 12 (IANS) Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, who arrives here Wednesday from New York on his way back from his first official visit to the US, will hold talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown soon after his arrival on a two-day visit.

    “The two leaders will meet at 10 Downing Street in the afternoon and will focus on bilateral issues as well as the regional security. The recently announced revised UK strategy on Pakistan and Afghanistan will also come up for discussion,” APP reported.


    Pakistan’s displaced cross 500,000 mark, Rs.1 bn released for relief (Lead, Changing dateline)

    Islamabad, May 12 (IANS) With the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing the fighting in Pakistan’s restive northwest crossing 500,000, the government has released Rs.1 billion ($12.4 million) for their immediate relief, as the UN relief agency appealed for massive international aid to cope with the crisis.

    The relief agency said in Geneva Tuesday it had so far registered 501,496 IDPs who had fled the fighting in three districts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

1.3 million refugees flee northwestern Pakistan to escape fighting

751 Taliban killed; Britain, France back Pakistan’s war on terror (Night Lead)

Islamabad/New York, May 12 (IANS) At least 751 Taliban have been in the security forces’ operations in Pakistan’s restive northwest, the military said, as Britain and France Tuesday fully backed Islamabad in its efforts to root out extremism.

Chief military spokesperson Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told reporters in Islamabad that 751 militants had so far been killed in Operation Raah-e-Haq that began April 26, while 29 security personnel had lost their lives and 77 were injured.

Geneva, May 12 (DPA) The UN refugee agency said Tuesday it has registered 501,496 people so far in a new influx of displaced people fleeing violence in northwest Pakistan.

They join 550,000 people displaced late last year who have since not returned home.
