    Sharia enforced at gunpoint will not be accepted, say Pakistani clerics

    Islamabad, May 17 (IANS) Pakistani clerics said Sunday suicide bombings and beheadings carried out by the Taliban is un-Islamic and urged Islamic nations to help Islamabad in the fight against militants.

    Sarfaraz Naeemi, ulema of Ahle-Sunnat, said Taliban’s agenda is in favour of Pakistan’s enemies and against Islam. He also called for a decisive action against the militants.


    Pak Army does not require foreign training: General Kayani

    Islamabad, May 17 (ANI): Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Kayani, has said that the Army has a full range of counter-insurgency training facilities,and added and that it does not require any foreign training to tackle militancy.

Islamabad, May 17 (DPA) Ground troops made advances towards Taliban-held towns in Pakistan’s Swat valley Sunday, as aid agencies renewed calls for “massive support” to help out more than one million refugees.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said the agency had registered more than 1.17 million displaced persons since May 2. They are in addition to nearly 550,000 others who fled fighting in the northwest region last year.

Residents advised to evacuate Pakistan town by noon

Islamabad, May 17 (IANS) Security forces engaged in the operation against the Taliban in restive northwestern Pakistan have advised residents of a town in Swat Valley to evacuate and move to some safer place by noon Sunday, Geo TV reported.

“Matta town residents have been directed to safely move out of the town by 12 noon today (Sunday),” the military said in a statement, which was also announced on local FM radio.
