    Suspected US missile strike kills 12 in Pakistan (Lead)

    Islamabad, May 16 (DPA) A US missile strike Saturday on a suspected hideout of Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan’s tribal region bordering Afghanistan killed at least 12 people, intelligence officials said.

    Two Hellfire guided missiles were reportedly fired by an unmanned aircraft and struck an Islamic seminary and a vehicle parked nearby in the Mir Ali area of the North Waziristan district.

Islamabad, May 16 (IANS) The Pakistani military might succeed in eliminating the Taliban from the country’s troubled northwest but there is no word on future plans to restore tranquility in the area, an editorial in a leading English daily said Saturday.

Islamabad, May 15 (IANS) Taliban fighters are shaving their beards to mingle with the civilians fleeing the security forces’ operations in Swat in Pakistan’s troubled northwest, the military said Friday, on a day when the country’s army chief briefed parliament on the offensive.

“We request the civil population of Swat to come forward and help the security forces in identifying the Taliban terrorists. We have confirmed reports that these Taliban terrorists, after shaving off their beards and cutting their hair, are fleeing from the area,” an Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.

Islamabad, May 15 (IANS) The security forces are ensuring that collateral damage is minimised in their operations against the Taliban in Pakistan’s troubled northwest, army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani informed parliament Friday.

He gave the assurance during an in-camera briefing to a joint session of parliament on the operations in Swat and two other districts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) that began April 26 and have so far claimed the lives of close to 1,000 Taliban fighters.



‘France to provide Pakistan nuke technology’
