    EU sends Pakistan $7.5 mn to help conflict victims

    Brussels, May 14 (DPA) The European Union (EU) Thursday gave Pakistan 5.5 million euros ($7.5 million) in aid to help civilians driven from their homes by the country’s assault on the Taliban.

    The emergency donation is intended to provide refugees from the fighting in Pakistan’s restive Swat Valley and surrounding areas with shelter, food, basic utensils and medical supplies.


    Pakistani Army chief visits Swat

    Islamabad, May 14 (IANS) Pakistani Army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Thursday paid a surprise visit to Swat in the country’s troubled northwest where the security forces are engaged in an offensive against the Taliban that has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 800 militants.

    Quoting sources, Geo TV said Kayani met the military commanders leading the troops in the fighting. He was also briefed about the progress made in the operation.

Pakistani military makes significant advances against Taliban: Media (Lead)

Islamabad, May 14 (IANS) The Pakistani military has made “significant advances” against the Taliban in the troubled northwest, an editorial in a leading English daily said Thursday, as another noted that the operation had also served to unite the country across the spectrum.

“It is clear that significant advances have been made in recent days and the Taliban are now on the defensive,” Dawn said in an editorial headlined “As the battle heats up”.



Karzai says, Afghanistan will target Taliban

Islamabad, May 14 (IANS) Sixty more Taliban fighters have been killed overnight in Pakistan’s restive northwest, taking to 822 the number of militants killed in a security forces’ operation against the insurgents, a media report Thursday said.

Geo TV said 60 extremists were killed when the security forces stormed the house of the nazim (administrator) of the Lower Dir district which the Taliban had taken over.



Suicide attack in Afghanistan kills policeman

Kabul, May 14 (DPA) A suicide bomber attacked a police station in the southern province of Kandahar Thursday, killing one policeman and wounding four, a police commander said.

The attack, the third in as many days in the war-torn country, took place Thursday morning in Spin Boldak district close to border with Pakistan as a bomber tried to enter the district’s border police headquarters with his explosive-packed vehicle, said General Saifullah Hakim, the border police commander in the region.
