US denies carrying out joint drone operations in Pakistan

London, May 14 (ANI): A day after media reports claimed Pakistan has allowed US drones to fly inside its geographical territory to carry out strikes against the Taliban and other extremist groups, US defence officials have refuted the accounts.

Washington, May 14 (ANI): Taking its relationship with Pakistan on the use of drones a step further, the United States, has for the first time, provided Islamabad surveillance information, including sensitive border photographs collected by the drones.
The information includes real-time video feeds and communications intercepts gleaned by unmanned Predator aircrafts, The New York Times reports.

Washington, May 14 (IANS) The United States military for the first time has provided Pakistan with a broad array of surveillance information collected by American drones flying along the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to the New York Times.

But it is not clear whether the cooperation will continue, the influential US daily said citing American military officials. While American military drones flew a handful of non-combat surveillance missions along the border earlier this spring at the request of the Pakistani government, requests for additional flights abruptly stopped without explanation, it said.



Pakistani president meets Brown

London, May 14 (IANS) Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari held talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown here after making his first official visit to the US.

According to the Pakistani High Commission in London, Zardari is paying a two-day visit, during which he will also meet Foreign Secretary David Miliband and opposition Conservative leader David Cameron, among others.



Civilian deaths down despite rising attacks in Afghanistan: NATO

Brussels, May 13 (DPA) Civilian casualties in Afghanistan were down 44 percent in the first four months of this year, compared to the same period in 2008, despite a 64 percent rise in insurgency attacks, a NATO report said Wednesday.

However, the security situation remains precarious, with the latest polls showing that 35 percent of Afghans say security has improved over the past six months and a further 13 percent saying it has got worse.



Swat Taliban stronghold captured, militant casualties rise to 762 (Lead)

Islamabad, May 13 (IANS) Pakistani security forces achieved a major breakthrough Wednesday by capturing the stronghold of the Swat Taliban as militant casualties on the 18th day of a military operation in the country’s restive northwest rose to 762 and the army chief asked his troops to minimise collateral damage during their advance.

The security forces had established a firm foothold in Peochar, the headquarters of Swat Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah, and other areas of the district, the military said.



After snub, Zardari and Brown to meet in London

The talks at Downing Street are expected to centre around the intensifying war between the Pakistani Army and the Taliban in Pakistan’s Swat Valley and North West Frontier Province (NWFP).



UN says more than 670,000 people left Swat, Malakand due to fighting
