    Minimise collateral damage: Pakistani army chief

    Islamabad, May 13 (IANS) Pakistan’s army chief Wednesday asked his troops to minimise collateral damage in their operations against the Taliban in the country’s restive northwest and to resort to precision strikes.

    “COAS (chief of army staff) has instructed the army to ensure minimum collateral damage even at the expense of taking risks, by resorting to precision strikes,” a statement issed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.


    Pakistan to open second front against Taliban: report

    London, May 13 (IANS) Pakistan plans to open a second front against the Taliban in the Waziristan tribal area as early as next month, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

    “The army is planning to go into Waziristan, possibly in June, which will involve huge numbers of troops in an attempt to establish some sort of state control over the area,” the Daily Telegraph quoted a source close to the Pakistani military as saying.

Troops kill 10 Taliban in northwest Pakistan

Islamabad, May 13 (DPA) At least 10 militants and one soldier were killed Wednesday when troops backed by jets and helicopter gunships fought Taliban insurgents in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat Valley and neighbouring districts.

The fresh action came a day after Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari appealed to the world to help more than 750,000 people displaced by the conflict.



UN chief backs action against Taliban

New York, May 13 (IANS) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has backed Pakistan’s fight against the Taliban and expressed his “deep concern” about the plight of half a million people who have been displaced by the ongoing military action against the militants.

“I expressed my deep concern and I expect President Zardari to take all necessary care to protect the civilian population,” Ban told reporters after the two leaders met at the United Nations Tuesday evening.

Islamabad, May 13 (IANS) An overwhelming number of Pakistanis prefer the instability and insecurity of a democratically-elected government to stability and prosperity under a military dictatorship, a new survey has found.

Seventy-three percent of those surveyed by the International Republican Institute (IRI) said the army should have no role in a civilian government while 20 percent favoured a military dictatorship.
