Pakistani lawyers begin long march despite police crackdown (Lead, Changing Dateline)

Islamabad, March 12 (IANS) Pakistani lawyers Thursday began their long march from Karachi to demand restoration of Supreme Court judges sacked two years back, as over 400 opposition activists across Punjab were rounded up in a major crackdown by the police on the eve of the march and the sit-in planned here next Monday.

A large number of lawyers gathered outside the Sindh High Court from where the long march was kicked off. A rally of lawyers left for Mazar-i-Quaid, Geo TV reported.



Pakistan should respect right of protest amid clampdown: US4

Washington, March 11 (DPA) The United States Wednesday said Pakistan should allow its citizens to protest government actions, but refrained from criticizing a massive government clampdown against opposition activists.

Pakistani police said they arrested more than 300 people earlier Wednesday on the pretext of avoiding violence ahead of a cross-country protest march planned for later this week. Opposition groups said the arrests numbered in the thousands.

The Punjab government Tuesday night began a crackdown on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders but a defiant Sharif vowed the struggle would continue.
