    Prabhakaran alive, claims pro-LTTE website

    Colombo, May 19 (IANS) Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran is “alive and safe”, a website sympathetic to the rebels claimed Tuesday.

    The Sri Lankan military Monday said that Prabhakaran was shot dead while fleeing the battle zone in the island’s north.


    Mamata woos Left Front partners of the CPI-M

    Kolkata, May 19 (IANS) After leaving the Left Front battered in the Lok Sabha polls, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is now eyeing its constituents, the Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).

    Banerjee appealed to the Forward Bloc and RSP to switch sides and join her in ousting Left Front major Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) while participating in an interactive programme on Bengali television channel Star Ananda Monday night.

Myanmar outfit trained Bangladesh Islamist militants: Report

Dhaka, May 19 (IANS) A banned Myanmarese insurgent group has been training Bangladesh’s Islamist militants since the 1980s, a newspaper report said Tuesday.

Banned Bangladeshi outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has had close links with the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), an insurgent group operating in the Arakan state of Myanmar, JMB’s explosives’ expert ‘Boma’ Mizan revealed during interrogation. Mizan was arrested May 14.



Six militants killed in Assam gun battle

Guwahati, May 19 (IANS) At least six tribal separatists were killed early Tuesday in a gun battle with the army in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, officials said.

A defence spokesperson said six militants of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were shot dead early in the morning in a gun fight with an army column near Donghap village in Karbi Anglong, about 290 km east of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.



Hillary Clinton visit to India not on cards yet

Washington, May 19 (IANS) The US looks forward to continuing to work with the new Indian government after the elections, but as of now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is not planning any visit to India.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the government,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters Monday referring to President Barack Obama’s statement Saturday after the ruling Congress-led coalition scored a victory in the parliamentary elections.

Mumbai, May 19 (IANS) In a not too unexpected development, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray late Monday severed all ties with his nephew Raj Thackeray, who had walked out of the fold three years ago to form the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) that severely dented the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance in the state in the general elections.

“Anybody who is an enemy of the Marathis is my enemy,” Bal Thackeray said in a statement.



Bhutia to quit Bagan

Kolkata, May 18 (IANS) Peeved at a show cause notice slapped on him by Mohun Bagan, soccer star Bhaichung Bhutia has decided to quit the club and is said to be negotiating with East Bengal.

Days after the show cause notice for allegedly missing some practice sessions and an exhibition game, Bhutia said he was no more interested in playing for Mohun Bagan.
