    Riot tainted Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani granted bail

    Ahmedabad, May 19 (IANS) A local court Tuesday granted bail to former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani, who has been charged with abetting mobs in the Naroda Gam and Naroda Patia localities of Ahmedabad in the 2002 riots in the state.

    Mitesh Amin, counsel for the former women’s welfare and higher education minister, told IANS that the Ahmedabad city sessions court has granted bail to Kodnani in the Naroda Gam case while in the Naroda Patia case, the bail hearing would continue.


    Mega project for Ghaziabad difficult after NDA’s defeat: Rajnath

    Ghaziabad, May 19 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Rajnath Singh, who won the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat in the polls, admitted Tuesday that his dream to bring a mega project to the area may not turn into reality following the defeat of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

    The BJP chief, who was on a “thanksgiving” visit to the constituency, told IANS that he was confident of the NDA winning power, and then ensuring projects worth Rs.2,000-2,500 crore (Rs.20-25 billion) to Ghaziabad.

10 arrests, injuries after Tamils clash with British police

London, May 19 (IANS) Ten people were arrested after violent clashes early Tuesday left 21 British policemen and 11 Tamil protesters injured in central London, police said Tuesday.

At least three policemen and eight Tamils were treated in hospital after the clashes, which began just after midnight when police moved demonstrators off a busy road opposite the British parliament, where they had been staging a sit-in.

Lucknow, May 19 (IANS) Stung by the results in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Tuesday advocated returning to the old Dalit agenda and spent 30 minutes of her nearly three-hour speech to party workers discussing a former aide who has been elected as a Congress MP.

About 1,000 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers, including all ministers, legislators, newly elected MPs and the defeated candidates from different parts of the country, together with all district and zonal coordinators from Uttar Pradesh, gathered at the party headquarters here.



Scramble by rivals to support victorious UPA (Lead)

New Delhi/Lucknow, May 19 (IANS) Arch rivals Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as well as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) Tuesday vied with each other to offer support to the victorious Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, which needs just nine more MPs to get the 272 figure needed to form government.

The Congress has, however, yet to make up its mind on taking support from these parties, which are its rivals in their respective states. The party is meeting its “pre-poll allies” Wednesday at 10, Janpath, the residence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.



Naveen Patnaik elected BJD legislature party leader
