    Ferguson plotting to depose Liverpool from list of all time greats

    London, May 17 (ANI): Sir Alex Ferguson has set his sights on establishing Manchester United as the most successful team in the history of English football after winning 18 titles — the same number as Liverpool.

    Ferguson and his team will be going for a fourth consecutive Premier League crown next season after a tepid stalemate ensured they repelled Liverpool’s challenge with a game still remaining.

    The Manchester United boss is plotting to officially depose Liverpool in the list of all-time greats by clinching title No.19 next year.

    Asked if it felt special to have equalled Liverpool’s record, Ferguson declared: “It will become a lot more special when we have got in front of them. And that’s what we will be aiming for next year. We are going for it again.”

    “They were the greatest team in the land when I arrived. But we have built slowly and now we will go again,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.


    Badals win Bathinda, Congress gains in Punjab (Second Lead)

    Chandigarh, May 16 (IANS) The prestige fight between Punjab’s leading political families of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his predecessor Amarinder Singh of the Congress in the Bathinda Lok Sabha constituency was Saturday won by the Badals even though the Congress won eight out of the state’s 13 seats.

    Harsimrat Kaur, the daughter-in-law of Chief Minister Badal and wife of Akali Dal president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, won from Bathinda by a margin of 120,948 votes over her Congress rival and Amarinder Singh’s son, Raninder Singh.

Rohit pulls off sensational win for Deccan Chargers (Lead)

Johannesburg, May 17 (IANS) Slamming an unbeaten 32 off 13 balls, Rohit Sharma pulled back Deccan Chargers from the brink of defeat to post a six-wicket victory over Kolktata Knight Riders in an Indian Premier League (IPL) cliffhanger at the Wanderers here Saturday.

The win has consolidated Chargers’ position for a place in the semi-final as they now have 14 points 12 matches have tipped Rajasthan Royals for the third position.

Tait slams CA for losing central contract

Kuantan (Malaysia), May 15 (IANS) India trounced Japan 5-1 in a classification match to finish fifth in the Asia Cup hockey tournament here Friday.

Tushar Khandekar scored two goals (64th, 69th minutes) while Rajpal Singh (2nd minute), skipper Sandeep Singh (21st) and Prabhjot Singh (66th) sounded the board once each.



Notice to Pappu Yadav on plea for cancellation of bail

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) The Supreme Court Friday sought a response from Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav on a plea by a Communist Party of India (CPI) worker seeking cancellation of his bail.

A bench of Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice Asok Ganguly issued notice to Yadav on the plea by CPI worker Ravindra Nath Singh, challenging a Patna High Court decision on Feb 18, 2009 granting the MP bail, pending its decision on his appeal against his conviction for the murder of CPI legislator Ajit Sarkar.

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) The Supreme Court Friday refused to accord an urgent hearing to the real estate tycoon Ansal brothers’ plea for release of the Uphaar theatre, which had turned into an inferno in 1997, killing 59 people.

A bench of Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice Asok Ganguly refused to hear urgently the plea by Ansal Club Private Limited, the Ansal brothers’ firm owning the theatre in south Delhi, saying it would be heard later after the court’s seven-week summer vacation that begins Friday.
