    Russia launches US communication satellite (Lead)

    Moscow, May 16 (RIA Novosti) Russia Saturday launched a rocket carrying a US communication satellite into space from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan, Russian space agency Roscosmos said.

    “The launch of the Proton-M rocket fitted with a Breeze-M booster and carrying a ProtoStar-2 telecommunication satellite went ahead at the scheduled time,” a spokesperson of the Roscosmos said.

Russia launches US satellite

Moscow, May 16 (Xinhua) Russia Saturday launched a rocket carrying a US communication satellite into space, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

The Briz-m rocket, with a ProtoStar-2 satellite atop, blasted off at 0057 GMT from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan, spokesman Alexander Bobrenev of the Khrunichev Centre, the manufacturer of the rocket, said.



Spacewalking astronauts repair Hubble gyroscopes

Washington, May 16 (DPA) US astronauts Friday completed a delicate spacewalk to replace three pairs of gyroscopes aboard the Hubble Space Telescope.

In the second of five planned spacewalks during the mission, astronauts Mike Massimino and Michael Good removed and replaced the gyroscopes that keep the telescope aligned and pointed toward celestial bodies being examined by astronomers.



MTNL launches 3G services in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 15 (IANS) State-run telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) Friday launched third generation (3G) mobile services in Mumbai at an investment of Rs.250 crore.

“Our total investment for the 3G launch in Mumbai is Rs.250 crore and we hope to rope in 100,000 customers by March next year. Connections will be available in about a month’s time,” MTNL chairman and managing director R.S.P. Sinha said.



Bharti Airtel crosses 100 million subscriber mark (Lead)

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) Leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel Friday said its mobile phone subscriber base had crossed the 100-million mark, making the company the third largest single country service provider in the world.

“Bharti Airtel has achieved 100-million subscriber mark,” said a beaming Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of the Rs.375-billion company. “This milestone reiterates the emergence of India as the world’s top telecom markets,” he told a press conference here.
