    EU called on Sri Lankan to resolve problems politically

    Brussels, May 20 (IANS) With Sri Lanka formally annoucing the defeat of Tamil Tigers Tuesday, the European Union called on Colombo to do all in its capacity to reach a sustainable political settlement that would meet the aspiration of all communities in the country.

    “This is essential for the future prosperity and long term development of the island,” Robert Evans, the head of the South Asia delegation in the 27-nation bloc’s parliament, said in a statement in Brussels.


    Four arrested for ’spying’ for India: Report

    Lahore, May 20 (IANS) Four men suspected of “spying” for India have been arrested here, a media report Tuesday said.

    They have been identified as Khalid, Abid, Karamat and Khizar. Their nationalities have, however, not been revealed.

Russia, US begin nuclear arms reduction talks

Moscow, May 19 (Xinhua) Russia and the US have started the first round of talks here on a new strategic arms reduction treaty, the Russian foreign ministry said Tuesday.

The US delegation is led by Rose Gottemoeller, US assistant secretary of state and the Russian side is headed by Anatoly Antonov, director of the security and disarmament department of the Russian foreign ministry.



Bill Clinton to help Haiti’s recovery

New York/Washington, May 19 (DPA) Former US president Bill Clinton will help jumpstart Haiti’s economic and social conditions in his new role as UN special envoy for the impoverished Caribbean nation, the world body said Tuesday.

Clinton was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the new task months after the two of them visited Haiti to hold talks with government leaders about programmes to rebuild the country following last year’s devastation caused by consecutive hurricanes.



Actor Patrick Swayze still alive, says spokeswoman

Los Angeles, May 19 (DPA) A spokeswoman for ailing US actor Patrick Swayze Tuesday refuted reports that the 56-year-old star of “Dirty Dancing” had died.

In a statement to KTLA broadcaster in Los Angeles, Annett Wolf said Swayze is “alive, well and is enjoying his life and he continues to respond to treatment” for his cancer.



Obama launches first US greenhouse gas standards
