    Buner, Dir mostly cleared of militants: Iftikhar

    Nowshehra, May 18 (ANI): NWFP Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain has said that internally displaced persons will soon hear a good news, claiming that most of the areas in Buner and Dir have been cleared of militants.


    Israel to build new settlement in West Bank

    Tel Aviv, May 18 (DPA) Israel is beginning construction of the first completely new Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank in 26 years, Israel Army Radio reported Monday.

    Contractors toured the site of the new Maskiyot settlement, in the Jordan Valley, after the regional settler council issued a tender for the construction of 20 new homes on it, the station said.

Children of Shepherds have a special school in Jharkhand

Dumka (Jharkhand), May 18 (ANI): A man in Jharkhand’s Dumka district is running a small school for the children of shepherd community from a small shelter to enable them become literate.
By running a free school for five years, Balmukund Yadav, who is in his thirties, has instilled hope among villagers that their children can be literate.
Yadav felt driven to educate village children after he personally faced much hardship to educate himself due to poverty. Thus, he resolved to educate other children of the area.

Washington, May 18 (IANS) Intelligence reports are the last thing one would expect to contain biblical quotations, but in the beginning of the war in Iraq a series of briefs for then US defence secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and others quoted from the Bible - giving fodder to the theory of ‘clash of civilisations’.

A series of cover sheets for intelligence reports written for Rumsfeld and other senior Pentagon officials during the early days of the war in Iraq in 2003 were adorned with biblical quotations, the New York Times reported Monday, quoting the material that appeared on the website of the GQ magazine.

Brussels, May 18 (DPA) European Union (EU) foreign ministers Monday called for an independent inquiry into alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka, amid deep concern about the plight of civilians.

“The EU calls for the alleged violations (of international humanitarian and human rights law) to be investigated through an independent inquiry. Those accountable must be brought to justice,” ministers said in a joint statement.
