    265,000 people fled Sri Lanka conflict zone, says UN

    Geneva, May 18 (DPA) The UN refugee agency said Monday that 265,000 people have fled the conflict zone in northeastern Sri Lanka in the last several months.

    UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman Ron Redmond said the refugees had “endured extreme conditions” in the conflict zone, a tiny strip of land that was controlled by the Tamil Tiger rebels. The area had constantly shrunk as government forces moved in closer.


    EU asks Sri Lanka to find inclusive political solution

    Brussels, May 18 (IANS) The European Union (EU) Monday called on the Sri Lankan government to outline a clear strategy leading to an inclusive political solution in the island nation.

    “The long-term security, post-conflict reconstruction and prosperity in Sri Lanka can only be achieved through such a process, to address the legitimate concerns of all Sri Lankan communities,” the EU foreign ministers said in a statement.

UN chief to visit Sri Lanka Friday

Colombo, May 18 (DPA) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is to visit Sri Lanka Friday to assess the humanitarian situation after an estimated 250,000 civilians fled the Tamil rebel controlled areas in the north of the country, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said Monday.

Ban is due to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa and is expected to tour refugee camps, following the declaration of victory Monday by the Sri Lankan military over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).



British opposition calls for immediate general election

Sri Lanka declares end of war against LTTE after killing Prabhakaran

Colombo, May 18 (ANI): Sri Lanka on Monday formally announced the end of war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam after chief V Prabhakaran was shot dead while trying to flee in an ambulance from the war zone in northern Sri Lanka.

The three-decade long fight by the LTTE for a separate homeland for Tamils came to end after the death of Tamil Tigers chief.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse told President Mahinda Rajpakse on Monday in a nationally televised ceremony that Sri Lanka’s war against Tamil Tiger rebels has “ended successfully.”
.
“We have successfully ended the war,” he told the President, who is his brother and commander-in-chief of the Sri Lankan armed forces.

Sri Lankan military commanders also lined up and shook hands with him before starting closed-door talks.

The meeting came as state television and defence officials announced that Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and the entire rebel leadership had been killed on Monday by government troops.

Israel to build new settlement in West Bank (lead)

Tel Aviv, May 18 (DPA) Israel is beginning construction of the first completely new Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank in more than a decade, Peace Now said Monday.

Contractors toured the site of the new Maskiyot settlement Sunday morning, after the regional settler council issued a tender for the construction of 20 new homes on it, said the Israeli settlements watchdog.
