Akshay does live stunt for ‘Kambakkht…’ promotion

New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Popular for his daredevil stunts, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar jumped off a 60-foot high elevated structure in the capital Thursday evening to promote his new film “Kambakkht Ishq” releasing Friday.

Clad in a black body hugging full sleeved T-shirt, jeans, sports shoes and shades, the actor played his comic self with the fans and the media before jumping off on the stage.

Neela Satyanarayan is Maharashtra’s first woman election commissioner

Mumbai, July 2 (IANS) Retired civil servant Neela Satyanarayan has been appointed the State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Maharashtra, official sources said here Thursday. She is the first woman in the state to hold the post.

Succeeding Nand Lal who retired recently as the SEC, she will take charge of her new assignment soon.

Backbenchers are in limelight for once (Parliament Diary)

New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Backbenches in the Lok Sabha, obscured by pillars in a circular chamber, are no longer the haunt of MPs who want to remain unheard of and even perhaps unseen. They are occupied by gen-next, no less.

Even veteran parliamentarians from the ruling benches stop for a while when they cross the backbenches to go out of the house. And it’s not due to the presence of young or beautiful women MPs. It is all because of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and his team – the gen-next ‘netas’ who love to sit on the backbenches.

Indian film, fashion celebs rejoice as gayness is decriminalised

New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) “Historic!” That is how the film and fashion fraternities have hailed Thursday’s Delhi High Court judgement decriminalising gay sex. Hailing India as great, they said the verdict would give more independence to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community.

Hairstylist Sylvie, who is a homosexual, said “this is a day to go down in history”. “This is a day to go down in history that a place like India has come to terms with the issue with a big touch of humanity and definitely recognised citizens’ comfort of being open about their sexuality,” Sylive told IANS.

Court extends Shiney Ahuja’s judicial custody till July 16

Mumbai, July 2 (IANS) A Mumbai court Thursday extended till July 16 the judicial custody of rape-accused Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja.

He was produced before the court this afternoon after his 14-day judicial custody ended, a police official said. He had been lodged in the Arthur Road Jail.

Antonio Banderas ordered to cede property

Madrid, July 1 (DPA) Spanish Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas will have to cede a part of his property in the southern jet-set resort of Marbella to the city council, because the land was acquired illegally by the previous owner, the daily El Pais reported Wednesday.

Banderas bought the seaside villa with a swimming pool in 1997.

Johnny Depp to teach his kids how to handle guns

London, July 1 (IANS) Hollywood star Johnny Depp is to pass on his fascination for guns to his children as he plans to teach them how to handle weapons.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star has two children with his long term partner Vanessa Paradis – Lily-Rose, 10, and seven-year-old Jack – and Depp admits he began handling firearms at the age of six when he was growing up in Kentucky, and wants to pass on his experience to his kids, reports imdb.com.

London, July 1 (IANS) Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Jamie Fox are reportedly being lined up to play pop legend Michael Jackson in a new biopic on the idol.

Hollywood studios are reportedly considering asking the “Edward Scissorhands” and “Ray” actors to star in the new biopic about the “Thriller” singer, who died of a suspected cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles home last week, reports contactmusic.com.

Schreiber turns down role to be with dog

London, July 1 (IANS) Hollywood actor Liev Schreiber turned down a role to a West End show as he did not want to be away from his dog.

Schreiber was asked to take the lead role in a play “Glengarry Glen Ross” but he passed it on because he wanted to be with his dog in New York. The play was being performed in London, reports contactmusic.com.
