New micro-endoscope may help detect tumours early

London, Nov 21 (IANS) Physicians currently insert camera-equipped endoscopes into patients to hunt for visible abnormalities, such as tumours, on internal organs. Now, a researcher is designing one that is capable of seeing deeper and may even help detect tumours at earlier stages.

Huikai Xie, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Florida (UF), is working on replacing the cameras with scanners that "see" beneath the surface of tissues - revealing abnormal groups of cells or growth patterns before cancerous growths are big enough to be visible.

CII launches toll free helpline on HIV/AIDS

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) In a bid to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS, the Confederation of Indian Industriy (CII) Friday announced the launch of a toll free helpline in four languages.

Making the announcement at a discussion organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Delhi State Aids Control Society (DSACS) and the CII here, Meenakshi Dhanda of the CII said that the helpline will be in four langauges - Hindi, English, Urdu and Punjabi.

Diabetes testing being made mandatory in India: Azad

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) Blood tests to detect diabetes are likely to be made compulsory at health centres across India following the internationally followed "opportunistic screening" norm. The scheme was in its pilot stage in 10 states, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Friday.

"The government has launched a National Programme for Prevention and Control of Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPDCS) on a pilot basis in 10 districts in 10 states which, among other things, seeks to facilitate early detection of this disease. This is in consonance with the internationally accepted strategy of opportunistic screening," Azad told the Lok Sabha.

Shankaranand, who headed Bofors probe panel, dead

Bangalore, Nov 20 (IANS) Nehru-Gandhi family loyalist and long time Congressman B. Shankaranand, who headed the joint parliamentary probe into $1.3 billion Bofors gun scandal, died Thursday of cardiac arrest. He was 84.

He passed away at a private hospital in Belgaum, about 500 km from here. He was admitted to the hospital Nov 18 with kidney complications, his family members said.

25 new dengue cases reported in Delhi

"In the last 24 hours, we have recorded 32 new dengue cases in the capital. The cumulative figure of those infected is 945," state nodal officer for dengue cases Debashish Bhattacharya told IANS.

Principal Secretary (Health) Deepak Sanan told IANS that Yogesh Bhardwaj, who was head of the oral surgery department in the Government Dental College of the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH), was suspended Wednesday for allegedly sexually harassing a postgraduate medical student.
