Saliva to help diagnose age-related problems in women

Washington, Nov 19 (IANS) The protein profile of a woman’s saliva, which changes with age, potentially opens the way to diagnose age-related conditions, non invasively and in advance, says a new study.

These diseases include lupus, Sjogrens syndrome (associated with dry mouth and dry eye), and other immune-related disorders that affect millions of women worldwide, often at higher rates than men.

Conjoined twins separated, one begins talking

Sydney, Nov 19 (DPA) One of the Bangladeshi conjoined twins Australian surgeons separated this week is talking and cuddling her stand-in mother while the other is wiggling her fingers and soon will be woken from her induced coma.

Doctors at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital said Thursday that scans of two-year-olds Krishna and Trishna showed no brain damage from the 31-hour operation.

Viagra kin perks up heart function in young adults

Washington, Nov 19 (IANS) Sildenafil, a drug for treating impotence, also perks up cardiac function in kids and young adults with single-ventricle congenital heart disease post Fontan surgery that redirects deoxygenated blood directly to the pulmonary arteries, bypassing the heart.

Single-ventricle defects are a collection of cardiac malformations that impair the heart’s ability to pump blood.

Hepatitis B targets men more viciously than women

Washington, Nov 19 (IANS) The Hepatitis B virus (HBV) targets men more readily than women, triggering serious complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer, says a new study.

Men infected with HBV are also six times more likely than women to develop a chronic form of the disease.

Firestorm follows US panel’s ruling on mammograms

Washington, Nov 19 (DPA) The US government moved Wednesday to quell a rising fury over the findings of an official panel that mammograms were no longer necessary for women in their 40s and that older women should have fewer tests for breast cancer.

US Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius indicated that women should ignore the panel’s findings, but she stopped short of criticising or countermanding the panel’s work.

Dalia Lama plays down rumours of ill health on Italy trip

Rome, Nov 18 (DPA) The Dalai Lama Wednesday denied reports that he is suffering from cancer, but admitted that his eventual passing would represent a blow for the Tibetan cause.

“The Tibetan people’s respect towards me is very strong and my death would be a setback,” the exiled Buddhist spiritual leader said whilst in Italy on a trip.

Ranji Trophy: Pujara slams unbeaten double ton (Round up)

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) Cheteshwar Pujara smashed an unbeaten double century as Saurashtra piled up a massive 544 for three in their first innings against Maharashtra on the second day in the Ranji Trophy Super League at Rajkot Wednesday.

At stumps, Maharashtra were 53 for 1 after Saurashtra, resuming at 236 for two, declared their innings after playing 70 overs in the day.

Himachal doctor suspended for sexual harassment

Shimla, Nov 18 (IANS) A doctor in a government hospital in the Himachal Pradesh capital was placed under suspension Wednesday for allegedly sexually harassing a student, an official said.

Principal Secretary (Health) Deepak Sanan told IANS that Yogesh Bhardwaj, who was head of the oral surgery department in the Government Dental College of the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH), was suspended Wednesday for allegedly sexually harassing a postgraduate medical student.

What will change with revised air quality standards?

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) India for the first time will now have a uniform health-based National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS), discontinuing the old practice of setting air quality standards for different land use classes like residential and industrial.

The new ambient air quality standards, revised after a gap of 15 years, provide a legal framework for the control of air pollution and the protection of public health and any citizen can approach the court demanding better air quality.

30 new dengue cases in Delhi take total to 913

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) With 30 new cases of dengue recorded in the national capital Wednesday, the total number of people infected with the vector-borne disease touched 913, health officials said.

“In the last 24 hours, we have recorded 30 new dengue cases in the capital. The cumulative figure of those affected is 913 ,” state nodal officer for dengue cases Debashish Bhattacharya told IANS.
