    Pakistan Budget 2008/2009 to be announced today: GST to 17% and import duty to 30% expected

    ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan budget 2008-2009 will be announced today, that is expected to increase the import duty from 25 to 30 per cent on most of the goods. It is also expected that govt would increase general sales tax (GST) to by 2% to 17%, the local newspaper reported today.

    “But I am sure they would be taking the latter steps,” local newspaper quoted one of the Govt official as saying. The increased import duty and GST will raise an additional Rs 200 billion in tax revenue the government desperately needs to jack up its development and relief efforts.


    Lawyers’ Long March: Caravan heading towards Multan

    KARACHI : A caravan of lawyers and members of civil society have reached Sukkur on Monday night from where they will move towards Multan on Tuesday. A large number of lawyers and members of civil society groups and political parties were included in the convoy that left on Monday morning from Karachi and Quetta to Sukkur. The Deposed chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry will also arrive in Multan today to receive the convoys from Sindh and Balochistan.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Government on Friday submitted to the United Nations a formal request for investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, local TV reported. Pakistan’s U.N. Ambassador Munir Akram met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and submitted the request, said Pakistan’s private Dawn TV channel. Bhutto, also former leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP),was killed in a gun and bomb attack last December while attending a political rally.
