1,942 terror incidents in Pakistan in 15 months

Islamabad, April 17 (IANS) At least 1,942 terror incidents were reported in Pakistan during the last 15 months, claiming 1,395 lives, parliament was informed Friday.

Compensation of Rs.250 million was paid to the families of the victims, the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, was told during question hour.



Sindh High Court issues notices to Musharraf, Qayyum

Karachi, Apr. 15 (ANI): Sindh High Court has issued notices to former Pakistan President General (r) Pervez Musharraf and former Attorney General Malik Qayyum for alleged “abrogation and subversion of the Constitution.”
Acting upon the petition filed by Moulvi Iqbal Haider, the SHC ordered Musharraf and Qayyum to respond by May 19, The Nation reports.
Chairman of Awami Himayat Tehreek Pakistan Haider filed the petition aimed at seeking trial of former president and his allies Sharifuddin Pirzada and Malik Qayyum over the charges of “ high treason”, as they abated in abrogation and subversion of the Constitution of 1973, either by proclaiming or assisting in proclaiming “ Provisional Constitution Order (PCO 2 of 2007)”.



Altaf demands public hanging of culprits behind flogging of Swat girl

Karachi, Apr 6 (ANI): Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has asked President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Interior Adviser Rehman Malik to publicly hang those who had flogged a young girl in Swat.

He made this demand while delivering a telephonic address on Sunday at a MQM women wing’s rally at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

The MQM observed a peaceful black day all over the country, including Karachi vehemently condemning the flogging of the young girl in Swat.

Protests were also held in other parts of the country, including Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Umerkot in Sindh and parts of the Punjab. Protests were also registered by the MQM in parts of England and some states of the USA.



Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s 30th death anniversary observed

Islamabad, April 4 (IANS) The 30th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan’s first elected prime minister, was observed Saturday with special prayers and memorial meetings across the country and especially in his home province Sindh.

Bhutto, the founder of the country’s ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), had been overthrown by then army chief Gen. Ziaul Haq and was hanged April 4, 1979 after his controversial conspiracy-to-murder conviction.
