Gambhir, Tendulkar help India take slim lead (Tea Report)

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) Gritty knocks from Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar on the fifth and the final day took India to the threshold of a draw in the first cricket Test and spoil Sri Lanka’s hope of their maiden win on Indian soil here Friday.

Gambhir’s fine 114 and an unbeaten half-century from Tendulkar (55) saw India bat the first two sessions successfuly and get to 341 for four in the second innings and take a slim lead of seven runs by the tea break at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium. Giving Tendulkar company at the other end was V.V.S. Laxman (28).

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) India were 341 for four in their second innings against Sri Lanka at tea on the fifth day of the first cricket Test here Friday.

Sachin Tendulkar was batting on 55 and V.V.S. Laxman at 28 as India took tea with a slim lead of seven runs at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium.

Clarke to lead Australians against All Star Team

Melbourne, Nov 20 (IANS) Michael Clarke, who missed the ODI series in India due to a back injury, will lead the Australians against Shane Warne-led All Star team in Sunday night’s All Star Twenty20 match at the Gabba in Brisbane.

National Selection Panel (NSP) chairman Andrew Hilditch said that Clarke, Brad Haddin and Peter Siddle were selected in the Australian squad to get some practice ahead of the first Test against the West Indies in Brisbane.

Gambhir century raises India’s hope of saving first Test (Lunch Report)

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) Opener Gautam Gambhir’s fine century on the fifth day raised India’s hope of saving the first cricket Test and prevent Sri Lanka from winning their first Test on Indian soil here Friday.

At lunch, India were 256 for three in the second innings with Gambhir batting on 105 and Sachin Tendulkar on 22 as the hosts reduced the deficit to just 78 runs and are looking to bat out the next two sessions to draw the match at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium.

India trail Sri Lanka by 78 runs at lunch

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) India were 256 for three in the second innings at lunch on the fifth day of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka here Friday.

Gautam Gambhir was batting on 105 and Sachin Tendulkar on 22 as India reduced the deficit to 78 runs. Sri Lanka had declared their first innings at 760 for seven in reply to India’s 426.

Mattoo brings about momentary peace in hockey camp (Lead)

Pune, Nov 19 (IANS) Hockey India (HI) president Ashok Kumar Mattoo appears to have brought about at least a temporary truce between the players and national coach Jose Brasa.

A worried Mattoo, who advanced his trip to Pune by a day realising the gravity of the situation, separately met the coach and the players. The compromise was reached and Sandeep Singh was reinstated as captain.

Mattoo brings about a truce between Brasa and players

Pune, Nov 19 (IANS) Hockey India (HI) president Ashok Kumar Mattoo appears to have brought about at least a temporary truce between the players and national coach Jose Brasa, attributing the recent stand-off between them to a lack of communication.

Both Brasa and deposed captain Sandeep Singh, who is seen as the spearhead of a revolt by senior players, did their bit to defuse the tension by making politically correct statements, though the coach was aggressive while talking to the media.

Middlesex sign up Gilchirst, set sight on Tendulkar

London, Nov 19 (IANS) English county club Middlesex have signed up Adam Gilchrist for next season’s Twenty20 Cup and are now looking to get Sachin Tendulkar on board as well.

Tendulkar is mulling over the offer to form a dynamic partnership with Gilchrist at the top of the order. But Tendulkar needs an approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but the Middlesex chief executive, Vinny Codrington is hopeful of signing up the player soon.
