Swine flu scare hits Chandigarh school attendance

Chandigarh, Nov 21 (IANS) A swine flu scare among students here has led to a sudden fall in attendance in schools and colleges in this union territory.

Screening of students is done every morning by their class teachers and suspected cases are sent home. Over 500 students studying at various schools here were sent back after they exhibited flu-like symptoms.

Carbon dioxide emissions up by 29 percent: Report

London, Nov 21 (IANS) Carbon dioxide emissions are up by 29 percent since 2000, far beyond the capacity of the global "sinks" to absorb such volumes, says a report.

The use of coal as a fuel has now surpassed oil and developing countries now emit more greenhouse gases than developed countries - with a quarter of their growth in emissions accounted for by increased trade with the West.

The gun-toting personnel were deployed at Narayan Patna in the southern district of Koraput, some 500 km from here, after a mob of over 300 attacked the police station Friday afternoon and attempted to looted weapons.

Gas explosion traps 139 coal miners in north-east China

More than 500 miners were working when the explosion occurred at 2:30 a.m. in a mine in Hegang City, Heilongjiang province, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Fire destroys 106 homes in Ecuador

Quito (Ecuador), Nov 21 (DPA) A serious fire destroyed 106 homes in a poor neighbourhood in Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador.

There were no immediately reports of deaths due to the fire which ravaged these homes Friday. However, the Ecuadorian Public Health Ministry said 14 children had to be admitted into hospital with symptoms of suffocation.

UN celebrates 20 years of child rights convention

Two killed as police open fire at tribal mob in Orissa (Lead)

Bhubaneswar, Nov 20 (IANS) At least two tribals were killed Friday when police opened fire at a mob that attacked a police station in Orissa's Koraput district, an official said.

More than 300 people allegedly attacked the police station at Narayanpatna, some 500 km from here, to protest frequent police patrolling in their area, considered a hotbed of Maoist activities.
