Agra varsity students forcibly close colleges

Agra, Nov 7 (IANS) Hundreds of students of the Dr. B.R.Ambedkar University took to the streets Saturday afternoon forcibly closing down all colleges, to protest the assault on students, including on girls, Friday by varsity employees.

The agitating students want assistant registrar Balaji Yadav sacked for allegedly instigating the employees to beat up the students, who had come to demand redressal of their grievances.

PM condoles Gopi Arora’s death

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday condoled the death of former civil servant Gopi Arora, a close aide of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Arora, who died Thursday, was from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and wielded enormous influence in the 1980s. He was finance secretary in 1989-90, serving the Indian government for over 35 years.

UAE police seize 1.5 mn pills

Dubai, Nov 7 (IANS) At least 1.5 million pills worth nearly $4 million were seized between January and October in a crackdown on illegal drug supply in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), WAM news agency reported.

Major General Abdul Al Jalil Mahdi Al Asmawi, director of anti-narcotics section of Dubai Police, Friday said the pills are smuggled into the UAE from Asian and Arab countries.

Chandigarh, Nov 7 (IANS) Eight people, including four women, were booked for taking a loan of Rs.2.5 crore (Rs.25 million) from a bank by providing fake documents, police said Saturday.

"We have received a complaint against eight persons, all residents of Mohali, from the manager of Kotak Mohindra Bank in Sector-9. Police have registered a case and started its investigation," said an official of Economics Offence Wing (EOW) said.

Officials reported serpentine queues in most balloting centres in the Firozabad parliamentary constituency of Uttar Pradesh as well as the state's 11 assembly seats. Badal asks centre for additional power for Punjab

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) More than 27,000 additional institutions of higher learning would be required to meet the targeted Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 30 percent for 2020, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal said here Saturday.

"This figure includes 14,000 colleges of general higher education, 12,775 additional technical and professional institutions and 269 additional universities," Sibal said in a presentation during the meeting of the consultative committee for the HRD ministry here Saturday.
