July 6th, 2009 SindhToday

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) At least 10 policemen and a sub divisional magistrate suffered injuries when residents in a northwest Delhi area pelted stones at them to protest a demolition drive.

The police fired in air when a rampaging mob violently forced officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to stop demolishing illegal structures on the Gram Sabha in Mukundpur in outer Delhi.

Three vehicles were also torched.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Haridarshan Dhaiya, station house officer of the Mukundpur police station Ranvir Singh, nine policemen, the SDM and a civilian suffered injuries in the violence.

The protest started when an MCD team with some policemen had gone to remove three illegal encroachments as per the directions of a court.

Hundreds of residents gathered at the spot and started shouting slogans against police and the government.

Police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the mob. The demolition drive was stopped for the time being.

“We have registered a case of rioting,” a police officer said.
