Students clash with police in Uttar Pradesh

November 5th, 2009 SindhToday

Lucknow, Nov 5 (IANS) Students clashed with police and set vehicles on fire in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district after a private bus mowed down a college student Thursday, police said.

Students of R.S.K. College went on rampage after the death of Indresh Kumar, who fell from a bus and came under its wheels. He died on the spot in the Phoolpur area in Azamgarh.

Demanding that the bus driver should be handed over to them, the irate students set a state-run transport bus and a police jeep on fire and also targeted a number of other vehicles in Azamgarh, some 300 km from here.

Many students were injured in the protest, police said.

“Taking into account the series of protests by minority community members, additional security has been deployed. The situation is tense, but under control,” police inspector Suryabhan Singh told IANS on telephone.

“According to our report, no one was seriously injured during the violent protests carried out by angry students,” he added.
