NASA moon mission to pave way for humans’ return

Washington, May 22 (DPA) US space agency NASA has said it is ready to send two missions to the moon in a launch next month that will set the course for the resumption of human lunar exploration.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) are to launch aboard a single rocket June 17.

US swine flu toll rises to nine

New York, May 22 (DPA) The number of confirmed deaths from the A(H1N1) influenza virus in the US rose to nine after the death of a young man in Utah, the federal Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Thursday.

The CDC put the total number of confirmed infections with the new virus in the US at 5,764.

Wall Street drops on economic recovery concern

New York, May 22 (Xinhua) The Wall Street closed lower Thursday as investors worried that the economy might not recover as quickly as expected.

Investors grew nervous after the credit ratings agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) warned that Britain may have its rating cut because of the nation’s increasing debt. S&P lowered the country’s credit outlook from “stable” to “negative”.

FBI warns Obama over shifting Guantanamo detainees to US

Washington, May 22 (IANS) The FBI has warned President Barack Obama of the risks involved in transferring the Guantanamo Bay detainees to the US after the controversial prison camp is permanently closed, a media report said Thursday.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Robert Mueller expressed concern about moving some 240 suspected terrorists into the US even if they are deemed to be no longer a risk, Geo TV said.

Poland to deploy US missile unit by year end, says minister

Warsaw, May 22 (Xinhua) Poland will deploy a US missile unit in the country later this year as part of a bilateral pact with Washington, Deputy Defence Minister Stanislaw Komorowski said Thursday.

Russia has strongly opposed the move.

Pandey’s century downs Deccan Chargers (Lead)

Centurion, May 22 (IANS) Young Manish Pandey became the first Indian to slam a century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to propel Bangalore Royal Challengers to a 12-run victory over Deccan Chargers at the SuperSport Park here Thursday.

Both teams were already through to the last four stage but Chargers’ loss means that they finished at fourth place and will play table-toppers Delhi Daredevils in the first semi-final Friday. Bangalore will meet Chennai Super Kings in the second semi-final Saturday.
