Turkish jets bomb targets in northern Iraq

Baghdad, June 21 (IANS) Two Turkish warplanes bombed several areas in Iraq’s northern Kurdish mountainous region, a media report said.

The fighter jets bombarded the Sidakan district in Arbil province, Xinhua reported citing a statement in Kurdish website PUK media web.

16 killed in Colombian election day violence

Bogota, June 21 (DPA) At least 16 people were killed in attacks by leftist rebels as presidential elections in Colombia got underway Sunday, government officials said.

Members of the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) shot dead three soldiers who were transporting voting papers in a remote part of the province of Meta, Defence Minister Gabriel Silva said.

Three held with detonators in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, June 21 (IANS) Three people suspected to be supporters of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were Sunday arrested with thousands of detonators in Tamil Nadu’s Triuchirapalli district, 320 km from here.

According to police, 4,900 ordinary detonators and 430 electric detonators were seized from the three men – Siva, Selvam and Tamizh.

Four prisoners escape from Uttar Pradesh jail

Lucknow, June 20 (IANS) Four prisoners escaped from a jail in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura city late Sunday, an official said. Four jail officials were suspended after the incident.

Sachin, Yogesh, Ajai and Awadesh, who were charged with loot, dacoity and other crimes, were found missing from their barrack Sunday evening.

The “Transformers” actor – who met the British star when the pair filmed “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” – was reportedly keen to prove to his girlfriend’s parents that he is the “real deal” on a recent trip to the 25-year-old actress’s London home.

US not to chase terrorists into Pakistan: Holbrooke

Islamabad, June 20 (IANS) The US will not violate Pakistan’s sovereignty by chasing terrorists in Afghanistan across the border into this country, US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke said Sunday.

“The US will not cross Pakistan’s border,” Holbrooke said, in an interview with a private TV channel, Online news agency reported.

Telugu actor Kota Srinivas Rao’s son dies in accident

Hyderabad, June 20 (IANS) Veteran Telugu film actor Kota Srinivas Rao’s son Kota Prasad died in a road accident here Sunday. He was 39.

Kota Prasad is survived by wife and two children. He also acted in one Telugu film “Siddham” released last year and had signed a couple of other films.

Chidambaram to raise terror issue with Pakistan: CCS

New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) A ministerial panel on security Sunday decided that terrorism and Pakistan’s actions in eliminating the scourge will dominate the talks between Home Minister P. Chidamabaram and his Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of a SAARC meeting in Islamabad June 26.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the chair, met here Sunday evening to decide the broad outlines and mandate for the home minister’s Pakistan visit.

Israel eases Gaza blockade

Jerusalem, June 20 (DPA) The Israeli government has adopted measures to ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip and extend the list of products allowed in, the prime minister’s office said in a statement Sunday.

After a meeting with his security cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel was ready to open its border with Gaza to all products not included on a new list of forbidden items.
