Manmohan arrives in Geneva on way to US

Geneva, Nov 21 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday arrived here on his way to Washington as the first state guest of US President Barack Obama.

Manmohan Singh will land in Washington Sunday to begin a five-day visit to the US that is expected to unveil a new framework for deepening the strategic India-US partnership around key global challenges ranging from counter-terrorism to climate change and non-proliferation.

UAE satellite company expands network

Abu Dhabi, Nov 21 (IANS) Thuraya Telecommunications, the United Arab Emirates based satellite operator has expanded its distribution chain in Europe, WAM news agency reported Saturday.

The UK-based satellite communications provider Applied Satellite Technology (AST) will now distribute Thuraya’s broadband service “ThurayaIP” and other solutions based on it in Europe and other global markets.

New governors named for Assam, Gujarat and Tripura

New Delhi/Agartala, Nov 21 (IANS) Former Orissa chief minister Janaki Ballabh Patnaik was Saturday appointed the governor of Assam and Tripura governor Kamla, transferred to Gujarat for remaining period of her term.

D.Y. Patil, an educationist from Maharashtra, was appointed as the governor of Tripura in place of Kamla, who took oath as Tripura governor Oct 15, 2009.

Considerable decline in militancy in J-K: DG Khudda

Jammu, Nov.21 (ANI): Director General of Police Kuldeep Khudda on Saturday said there has been a considerable decline in the militancy-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to media men here, Kuldeep Khudda, Director General of Police said militancy-related violence has dropped by almost 23 percent this year. He informed there was a 38 percent drop last year, the lowest in 19 years, but added that he was hopeful of further improvement in the situation this year.

We were not given a hearing: Reddy’s mining firm

Bangalore, Nov 21 (IANS) Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), owned by rebel Karnataka Tourism Minister G. Janaradhan Reddy, Saturday said it was not given an opportunity to present its version by the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which recommended the controversial firm be asked stop illegal mining in Andhra Pradesh.

“The committee had no jurisdiction to submit such a report as there was no direction from the Supreme Court to that effect. The CEC is not even a party to the writ petition,” company managing director B.V. Srinivas Reddy said in a statement from Hyderabad.

Bengal to file report Monday on school disruption in Lalgarh

Kolkata, Nov 21 (IANS) Adhering to a court directive, the West Bengal government Saturday said it would submit a status report to the judiciary Nov 23 on alleged disruption caused to educational activities in Lalgarh by schools housing security forces engaged in anti-Maoist operations.

The high court, acting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed Saturday by the West Midnapore Bhumija Unnayan Samiti (Welfare Society of West Midnapore People) that alleged that the presence of the forces in schools had hampered studies, directed the state government to file a status report by next Tuesday (Nov 24).

Team India, Sri Lanka arrive in Kanpur for second Test

Kanpur, Nov 21 (ANI) The Indian and Sri Lankan cricket teams arrived in Kanpur on Saturday for the second Test starting on Tuesday at the Green Park stadium.
Earlier in the first Test at Ahmedabad, Team India had faced a massive 334 runs deficit on first innings and was in danger of losing the match.
However, Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and opener Gautam Gambhir helped the team score 412 runs and bat out the final day for a draw.
The Test also saw Tendulkar achieve another milestone by becoming the first batsman to complete 30,000 international runs.
