Lahore, May 7 (ANI): In a major reshuffle in the countrys intelligence apparatus, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has handed over the political wing of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to the Intelligence Bureau (IB) .

President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza GilaniPakistans IB is part of the countrys Interior Ministry. It is Pakistan’s main domestic intelligence and espionage agency, and its tasks include counter-intelligence and internal security matters. It is considered as a rival of the countrys all powerful intelligence network ISI.

The Prime Minister decided to make the changes after having consultations with PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. The move was finalised in order to tighten the new governments grip on the countrys affairs, reported the Daily Times.

Currently, the IB is headed by Wing Commander (R) Tariq Lodhi, a close friend of Zardari.

Quoting unidentified sources in the Presidency, the report said Musharraf was no longer receiving fortnightly intelligence reports from the ISI and the Military Intelligence (MI).

It added that the President was now relying only on the reports from the IB, which also shared its information with the prime minister.

From now onwards, the ISI would send intelligence reports to the prime minister and the MI to the Army Chief and the Corps Commanders. And, all civilian intelligence agencies would report to the prime minister, added the report. (ANI)

  1. ISI has its own agenda to use religious extremist that sabotage the politicians. ISI and the IB should report to the PM and if the IB is headed by Wing Commander (R) Tariq Lodhi, a close friend of Zardari, if only he (Tariq) has no past links with the military. At the moment the threat is, from the internal terrorists ignored by ISI not from external sources. The future projects like IPI Gas pipeline depends largely on securing it from these terrorist who can blow it up whenever they like creating friction between IPI, causing problems for the government. Let us put it this way ISI knows who the terrorist are but the ISI turns the blind eye for their own benefit and agenda. Let the government be in charge not the military or the ISI. Having said the general has clear idea as how to control ISI for he knows who they are and he is a valuable asset to take his advice as well as army chief. But at the same time Nawaz Shariff should also be taken into confidence as he is the chief of his party. The government has to be very diplomatic internally and externally.
