SC Judges Act to be amended: Naek

ISLAMABAD : Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek has said that the Supreme Court (SC) Judges Act was to be amended if every one agrees to all judges.

Talking to a private TV channel he said that the committee has approved a resolution and now the modalities were to be worked out.

He said the two constitutional experts, Aitzaz Ahsan and Abdul Hafeez Pirzada have divergent views. Anita, he said, has given his opinion in writing and we are awaiting the opinion of Abdul Hafeez Pirzada who also wants to give his opinion in writing.

Both the opinion will be placed before the two heads of the parties and they will decide what has to be done and which modality has to be adopted, Naek added. He said whatever modality will be adopted there will have to be a consensus and it has got to be in line in accordance with law and Constitution.

To a question about his meeting with the Prime Minister, the Law Minister said, “I had a meeting with the Prime Minister the other evening but I just made him aware about the committees deliberations they have concluded.

He said the Prime Minister also gave him some very specific instructions about the jail reforms and he wants that the jails in future should not be known as jails but as reformative centres.

He said the Prime Minister has also instructed him to make amendments in the Prisons Act and the Police Orders. The Prime Minister, he said, was also concerned with regard to the NAB ordinance, National Accountability Bureau Ordinance and we have started working on it to bring it at par with the Constitution and the fundamental rights of citizens of this country.
