PESHAWAR:Unidentified attackers on Sunday shot dead a pro-Taliban militant commander and his guard in Dera Ismail Khan, officials said.

The commander, Haji Khanan Khan, and his companions were travelling in a car when attackers opened fire on them in the Darazinda semi-tribal area in the northwestern town of Dera Ismail Khan, a security official told AFP.

“Khanan Khan and one of his bodyguards were killed in the shooting, while three others were injured,” the official said.

The attackers fled before they could be identified, he said, adding that Khan had already been the target of a few failed assassination bids.

Khan sided last year with Pakistani authorities when they launched an operation to clear Uzbek militants from South Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan. (AFP)
