ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Government on Friday submitted to the United Nations a formal request for investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, local TV reported.

Pakistan’s U.N. Ambassador Munir Akram met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and submitted the request, said Pakistan’s private Dawn TV channel.

Bhutto, also former leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP),was killed in a gun and bomb attack last December while attending a political rally.

Benazir BhuttoPresident Pervez Musharraf asked for a Scotland Yard team to join in the investigation after Bhutto was killed.

But the coalition government led by the PPP said the Scotland Yard team was given “limited mandate ” during their probe, and are not authorized to investigate who are the persons behind the hideous crime.

The PPP, now headed by Bhutto’s widower Asif Zardari, has been asking for U.N. probe into Bhutto’s assassination since she was killed. (Xinhua)
