Govt to fully facilitate Long March: Sherry
Jun 12th, 2008 | By Sindh Today | Category: Focused, Pakistan, Top NewsISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Thursday said government would fully facilitate lawyers’ long march, and had signed a Code of Conduct with organisers of the event and district administration, Islamabad. Addressing a press conference at PTV headquarters, the minister said Co-ordination Committee constituted on the directives of Prime Minister met Thursday to review and finalise all arrangement made for peaceful conduct of march.
“We review security arrangements with an aim how to facilitate the participants of long march,†she said.
Co-ordination Committee included PML-N leaders Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal while PPP was represented by Sherry Rehman, A Rehman Malik, Khurshid Shah, Farooq H Naik and Qamar Zaman Kaira.
The meeting decided not to create any hurdle in the way of long march, however, the minister said some areas lying in Red Zone including Diplomatic enclave , PM Secretariat, Presidency and some sensitive installation would be cordoned off due to security reasons.
She said the lawyers had assured the government to fully co-operate with the government and law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order situation.
They have also assured that long march would not be extended to other areas,she said.
The minister said routes for long march had been determined after consultation with ICT and Punjab Government. The participants of Long March would enter the federal Capital through Faizabad and reach Parade Ground after passing through Zero Point, Kashmir Highway, Aabpara, Sohrwardi and Embassy Road.
Police would monitor law and order situation while ICT would ensure provision of civic amenities to participants including medical, food, water and other.
The minister said a media centre had been established in collaboration with Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalist to facilitate journalists.
She said the organisers had assured that there would not be any damage to either life or property of any citizen.
Elaborating Code of Conduct, Sherry Rehman said organisers of the march would facilitate police in identifying the suspicious elements. No one would be allowed to carry arms in the march. Capital Police would ensure law and order while Islamabad district administration would make available civic amenities to the participants. The use of loud-speakers would be in accordance with the law.
“We have not imposed any restriction on the march and its upto the organisers how long they want to continue it,†she said.
She said PPP-led coalition government would fulfill its promises made with public including reinstatement of deposed judges. (APP)
