Long March: Caravan left for Islamabad

GUJRAT : The caravan of lawyers, representatives of civil society and the workers of political parties moving towards Islamabad here on Friday.

Caravan left from Jhelum after leading lawyers gave address to a large gathering of participants of long march.

Talking to lawyers convention, Aitzaz Ahsan said the judges have been paid their salaries, which means they are “working but not functional”

He said the long march is peaceful.

SCBA president said if the Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry is restored in his office, he would give complete justice to Pervez Musharraf as well.

He maintained, “if the judges are not restored now, no judge will be able to function independently in future.”

A motorcade consisting of 500 vehicles has left for Islamabad from here.

The lawyers plan to stage a sit-in and organize the protest demonstration in front of the Parliament House.

The lawyers’ leaders said the protest in front of the Parliament House is to remind the house of pledge regarding the restoration of the deposed judges.

Earlier on arrival in Gujrat, local bar members, political workers and leaders and thousands of citizens welcomed the march participants. They chanted slogans and showered petals on the march.

Talking to participants in Gujrat, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said the local administration, on various spot, tried to stanch the onward movement of Long March; however if the aim is sincerely pursued, no power can stop its attainment.

Commenting on the essence of the Long March, Aitzaz said Long March is not just a jump from one place to another, it is a history movement.

‘Long March is aimed at not just the restoration of the judges, but wresting our rights from the grip of dictators, SCBA said adding Long March is moving to change the approach and attitude of the people of Pakistan.

Expressing his commitments with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), he said he has 40-year long companionship with PPP, it is unlikely for him to quit his party, adding, I am at variance with my party at the modus operandi of judges restoration. Aaj TV, 2008
