ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Friday said that in past it was only PPP that remained committed for the cause of democracy and it is a good omen that now other political parties have also stepped in the field.

Talking to a private television channel, she said that being a ruling party the PPP is not participating in the long march but it doesn’t mean that the party has separated itself from the common public demand.

The PPP had promised the people to restore the deposed judges and still stands to its commitment, she said.

Sherry RehmanSherry said that she was in the same vehicle from which the martyred Chairperson of the party announced to restore the deposed judges and the party leadership would honour her words.

She said that the PPP government has not only lifted the restrictions from the free movement of deposed judges of superior courts but it also paid their salaries.

These steps stand testimony to the fact that democratic government is sincere to restore the deposed judges, she said.

She said the government has no objection over the long march of lawyers adding it is their democratic right and the PPP has believed in advocating democracy in the country.

The Information Minister said that some areas were cordoned off due to their sensitivity otherwise the participants of the long march were allowed unrestricted to reach their destination.

She said that PPP has made no change in its policy and those who think so are mistaken.

Sherry Rehman said that PPP had arranged reception camps to facilitate the long march participants and its workers and lawyers are also present in the show with party flags.

The party being in the government had not given an open call to its workers to participate in the march she said and added had it given a call the size of gathering would have been manifold.

It is a historic day in the context that a large number of people have gathered in the capital and they are being facilitated and welcomed by the administration.

She said that restoration of deposed judges is not so easy as it is being deemed by some people adding because the democratic government do not want to take any extra constitutional step in this regard.

The PPP government want to put the country on path to real democracy and it was due to the wisdom of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto that the uniform of President was removed and the party would continue its efforts to create a balance in the various state institutions. (APP)
