Pakistan Bar Council to decide future strategies in today’s meeting

LAHORE : The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) will decide the future of lawyers’ movement for the restoration of the deposed judges during its meeting being held today said Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council, Syed Rehman.

Talking to reporters after meeting of the PBC delegation on Friday with Federal Minister for Law, Farooq H Naek, he added that the council would closely examine the proposed constitutional package in the meeting.

Syed Rehman said that he believed that the decision of terminating the long march without staging sit-in was a mistake.

He was of the view that the long march was not managed properly.

He added that it does not imply that lawyers movement has come to an end.

A 10-member delegation of the PBC met the minister to convey reservations and problems of the legal fraternity.

The minister on the occasion said that the PBC is the main body of the lawyers and the delegation has made several suggestions for the betterment and proficient working of the legal fraternity.

“Our government is committed to reinstate all deposed judges and has taken several steps to address this issue”, the minister said.

He said that the end of judges detention, payments of salaries to all deposed judges and increase in number of Supreme Court Judges are the steps taken by the PPP led government.

“We have furnished the coalition partners with copies of proposed constitutional package for their suggestion, as it would be finalized with introduction of modifications proposed by the coalition partners”, he added.

He said that the government has taken several steps for the betterment of lawyers and judiciary in the country. The lawyers would be given representation in Access to Justice Program in order to make the system transparent and provide speedy justice. Aaj TV, 2008
