The relatives of the deceased Abdul Nabi Brohi registered a case with the Jamshoro police against Abdullah Baledi, Athar Solangi, Arshad, Zahid Mugheri, Ameer Mahar, Abu Bakar Magrio, Amjad Zardari, Rafiq Brohi and five other unknown persons.
The ongoing semester examinations in the SU and the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, were postponed after this incident. Meanwhile, the Sindh University on Wednesday decided to observe five-day mourning and postponement of the ongoing semester examination following the death of a student in the boy’s hostel early Wednesday in a clash between some students. The student was identified as Abdul Nabi of BS Part-III. The semester examination would resume with effect from May 19, 2008 as per the already scheduled programme, while the postponed papers would be conducted at the end of the examination, says a university press release.
A meeting discussed the situation at the campus due to frequent load-shedding, which disturbed the examinations, laboratory work, hostel as well as residential campus life. The registrar informed the meeting that due to semester examinations and the problem of frequent load-shedding at the campus, he invited the representatives of Wapda Sindh and advised them to exempt the university from load-shedding schedule or minimise the load-shedding hours.
The registrar said on the same day students from boy’s hostels protested on the Indus Highway against the load-shedding. The university administration talked to the students and informed them that Wapda representatives had assured that they will talk to higher-ups to minimise the load-shedding hours. The protesting students then returned to their hostels.
Around 2 to 3 am on a point to appear or not to appear in the paper scheduled for May 14, some students fought with each other, resulting in serious injuries to a student who was shifted to a hospital where he died. The university administration has convened an emergency meeting of the Discipline Committee to take action against the involved students, the press release concluded.
