Sindh Madrassatul Islam to be upgraded to university

The seriousness of people at the helm of affairs towards education can be gauged from the fact Efforts are again being made for the upgrading of the status of Sindh Madrassatul Islam (SMI) to university.

A six-member committee, constituted at a meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) of the SMI chaired by Federal Education Minister, Ghous Ali Shah, discussed the structure, character and charter of the proposed university. It decided, in principle, that the SMI will be upgraded to Sindh Madrrassa University forthwith, said a press release. It may be mentioned that Hakim Mohammad Said, in the capacity of Sindh Governor, had granted charter to the SMI for functioning as university. It was also resolved in the meeting that the proposed university will be one of the modern and extra-ordinary universities of the country, linked with foreign universities imparting education of latest fields of science and technology and the non-conventional subjects.

The committee also identified the specific fields of running the proposed university without any financial assistance of the government, added the press release. The BoG nominated former vice-chancellor of the University of Karachi (KU), Jamil Jalibi as the chairman of the committee, which will work on the project while its members will be the KU VC, Dr Zafar H Zaidi, Sindh Education Secretary, Sharif Baloch, former finance secretary Sindh, Shahzad Sheikh, Chairman, Board of Secondary Education, Karachi, M Ismail Memon, Principal Sindh Madressa, Muhammad Ali Shaikh.
