Mohammad Asif detained in Dubai

According to sources, Official in Dubai will decide whether to prosecute or Let him (Asif) go back to Pakistan after the lab results are out. Sources also said the board only learnt of Asif’s detention late on Sunday and immediately sent a team to resolve the matter. “Obviously it is a big embarrassment for Pakistan cricket but first they have to see what is the real case.†It is pertinent to mention that Asif has been named in the Pakistan squad to play in a triangular series in Bangladesh from June 8 against India and the hosts.
A spokesman for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed about Asif’s detention in the United Arab Emirates. “Yes, Asif is in custody. He was stopped at Dubai airport for possessing ‘some material’,†PCB director media Mansoor Suhail said. He said PCB human resources director Nadeem Akram was in Dubai and a lawyer had also been hired to assist Asif. “Owing to the gravity of the situation, the Pakistan Embassy in Dubai has also been alerted. And we are not sure about the make of the substance.â€
According to reports that Asif was bit drunk and got into an argument with airport official, which led to a brawl and he also slapped one of them. However, PCB denied about Asif being involved in fighting. “This is all just speculation” Mansoor said the board would consider Asif innocent until he was charge-sheeted by authorities in Dubai for possessing any banned drug. “We are hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon and the whole affair will prove a big mistake,†maintained the PCB official.
