New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Most parts of India continued to sizzle in the heat Saturday, with high humidity adding to the discomfort in the coastal regions. Hissar in Haryana recorded the country’s highest maximum temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius.

The national capital wasn’t much better off, with a high of 41.1 degrees Celsius, three above normal, and a low of 27.5.

The weatherman has not held out any hope for the heat-affected people in the Indian plains. The met office says the weather will remain dry.

But there is some hope for people up in the western Himalayas. There is a storm brewing across India’s north-western border, which may bring rain or thundershowers to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between Monday and wednesday, the weather office said here.

Cyclone Nargis that had brought rain to southern India, eastern India and then the northeast has now crossed the Myanmar coast.

Rain and thundershowers will continue until Tuesday in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep islands, the met office predicted.

The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Saturday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
