BJP condemns Shiv Sena violence at TV channel offices

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned Friday’s attack by Shiv Sena activists on the offices of IBN-Lokmat network channel in Mumbai and Pune.

BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told IANS that the incident was “unfortunate and strongly condemnable”.

FIH ties up with SAIL as World Cup sponsor

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Hockey India (HI) Friday announced a sponsorship tie-up for the 2010 World Cup with the Steel Authority of India (SAIL).

The Hero Honda FIH World Cup will be hosted by India in March 2010.

Shiv Sainiks attack TV channel offices in Mumbai, Pune; 4 staffers injured (Second Lead)

Mumbai, Nov 20 (IANS) Shiv Sena activists Friday vandalised the offices of the IBN-Lokmat television channel in north-east Mumbai and in Pune and assaulted journalists, to protest the alleged misquoting of party chief Bal Thackeray’s remarks on cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. The attack has drawn condemnation from all quarters.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan assured strong action against attackers.

Bhaichung injured, advised three-week rest

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) India football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been advised three weeks’ rest after he stretched calf-muscle at the national training camp at Margao in Goa.

Bhaichung underwent check-up in Mumbai Friday and a specialist advised him rest.

No decision on hockey team’s captaincy: Mattoo

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) Hockey India (HI) president Ashok Kumar Mattoo’s assertion in Pune that Rajpal Singh was not the choice of selectors for captaincy is factually correct — but an HI release clearly mentioned the striker as captain for the Champions Challenge tournament in Argentina.

It now transpires that the team list signed by the selectors only had the names of the players and someone at HI named Rajpal captain. It is now clear that HI did it on the advice of chief coach Jose Brasa.

Gambhir and Tendulkar centuries save Test for India (Roundup)

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar Friday hit match-saving centuries as India drew the first cricket Test, leaving Sri Lanka still without a Test victory in this country.

Gambhir scored a fine 114, Tendulkar remained unbeaten on 100 and V.V.S. Laxman stayed with him 51 not out as India made 412 for four in the second innings on the final day at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium.

FIH chief says elected HI will be in place soon

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leandro Negre Friday asserted that a democratically elected Hockey India (HI) will be in place before the World Cup as that is the only way to put the game back on the rails here.

Negre, who is here to sew up the sponsorship for the World Cup with the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), categorically stated that there would be no further postponement of the election.

Tendulkar crosses 30,000 runs in international cricket

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) Sachin Tendulkar reached another milestone Friday when he completed 30,000 runs in international cricket en route his century on the last day of the first Test against Sri Lanka here.

Tendulkar, who completed his 20 years in international cricket and 17,000 runs in the One-day international this month, needed 35 runs to reach the latest landmark. He clipped a Chanaka Welegedara delivery to the square-leg region to bring up the record during India’s second innings.

India draw first Test with Sri Lanka

Ahmedabad, Nov 20 (IANS) India drew the first cricket Test with Sri Lanka at Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium here Friday.

India were 412 for four in the second innings when both the teams decided to call it off. Sri Lanka declared their first innings at 760 for seven in reply to India’s 426.
