3,500-year-old underground town found in Egypt

Cairo, June 21 (IANS) Archaeologists have found a 3,500-year-old Egyptian town buried under the earth in the country’s northeastern region of the Nile delta.

The city, discovered by a team of Austrian archaeologists in Tell El-Dab’a, is likely to be Avaris, the capital of Hyksos rulers who ruled Egypt from 1664 B.C. to 1569 B.C., Egyptian Cultural Minister Farouk Hosni was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

10 Pakistani pilgrims killed in Saudi bus crash

Riyadh, June 21 (IANS) At least 10 Pakistani pilgrims were killed and 25 injured when the bus in which they were travelling from Mecca to Medina turned turtle, a media report said.

The accident occurred near Khulais, 150 km from Mecca. Eight passengers died on the spot, while one died on the way to hospital and another after reaching there, Xinhua reported citing an Arab News report Sunday.

Kaka sent off as Brazil beat Ivory Coast to go through (Lead)

Johannesburg, June 21 (DPA) Brazil beat Ivory Coast 3-1 to qualify from Group G Sunday in Johannesburg but Kaka was sent off.

Dunga’s team took the lead in Soccer City through Luis Fabiano in the 25th minute and he added a second five minutes into the second half before Elano made it three in the 62nd.

Turkish jets bomb targets in northern Iraq

Baghdad, June 21 (IANS) Two Turkish warplanes bombed several areas in Iraq’s northern Kurdish mountainous region, a media report said.

The fighter jets bombarded the Sidakan district in Arbil province, Xinhua reported citing a statement in Kurdish website PUK media web.

16 killed in Colombian election day violence

Bogota, June 21 (DPA) At least 16 people were killed in attacks by leftist rebels as presidential elections in Colombia got underway Sunday, government officials said.

Members of the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) shot dead three soldiers who were transporting voting papers in a remote part of the province of Meta, Defence Minister Gabriel Silva said.

Three held with detonators in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, June 21 (IANS) Three people suspected to be supporters of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were Sunday arrested with thousands of detonators in Tamil Nadu’s Triuchirapalli district, 320 km from here.

According to police, 4,900 ordinary detonators and 430 electric detonators were seized from the three men – Siva, Selvam and Tamizh.

Four prisoners escape from Uttar Pradesh jail

Lucknow, June 20 (IANS) Four prisoners escaped from a jail in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura city late Sunday, an official said. Four jail officials were suspended after the incident.

Sachin, Yogesh, Ajai and Awadesh, who were charged with loot, dacoity and other crimes, were found missing from their barrack Sunday evening.

London, June 20 (IANS) Hollywood actor Shia LaBeouf has reportedly impressed girlfriend Carey Mulligan’s parents after meeting them on a recent trip to Britain.

The “Transformers” actor – who met the British star when the pair filmed “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” – was reportedly keen to prove to his girlfriend’s parents that he is the “real deal” on a recent trip to the 25-year-old actress’s London home.
